Research Article Development ~ TRAINING

Neither medical school, residency, nor preparation for board certification requires formal training in research manuscript writing and analysis. For those interested in a career that includes research and publication, this knowledge set is critical.

Medwrite offers an intensive course that demystifies the research manuscript development process and speeds the path through peer review to publication.

Target Audience

This course is designed for those involved in medical and basic science research. The course level is appropriate for participants in the early stages of a research career as well as for the more experienced investigator.

Course Overview

The AOE Course provides comprehensive didactic training in the development of science’s central document—the research article. Article construction is taught as an activity performed in tandem with the research study. The processes of research question refinement, electronic literature review, study design selection, and accurate reporting and interpretation of results are clarified. Careful attention is paid to the ethics of authorship, funding disclosure, and successful peer-review interaction. Graphics assembly, referencing, and abstract preparation are detailed. Importantly, authors learn to navigate and accelerate article preparation and publication using the AOE RoadMap and Statistics Selector.

  • Learn to write the study design-driven research article and apply appropriate statistical analysis.
  • Succeed in peer-reviewed publication.
  • 25 sections / 10 take-away Learning Resource Materials.
  • Unique, step-by-step AOE RoadMap.
  • Written and presented by award-winning research author with 99% rate peer journal article acceptance.

For nearly a decade, the AOE Course has been generously invited by the Scientific Committee of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO) to its World Congress. We look forward to the privilege of presenting the Course again at upcoming world congresses. Please look for us then!

In 2013, just before starting medical school. I attended the AOE course which took place In Istanbul. Attending this course was of great benefit to me in many ways. I never wanted to be an academic surgeon before. This course triggered that interest by showing me the importance of sharing valuable clinical experience with the rest of the surgical and nonsurgical community—in addition to teaching me how to write a scientific paper. Since then, I have published several articles and conference papers. I highly recommend this course and I would like also to thank Jane Buchwald for arranging such a course. It had, and will have, a great impact on my medical career.- —Suhaib Ahmad
You really helped me understand the logic and structure of a research article. Now I can build on this invaluable training as my team embarks on developing our current study manuscript.- Medical Resident
Jane Buchwald is absolutely the subject matter expert. I loved all the details and wish I had this Course years ago. This is essential but very dry material made engaging and inspiring.
I attended the AOE course at the recent Frankfurter Meeting. I have known the course director for a long time was curious about what the course had to offer for the more experienced scientific writer. I was surprised about the comprehensive setup. It truly walks you through every developmental step of a scientific manuscript; from the research idea to the final writing, submitting, and beyond. Every step is well explained with good rationale and relevant facts about the history of science. That, together with an experienced course director who is enthusiastic to teach you every step in the scientific writing process, and also wants to get to know you on a personal level, is a true blessing. I can recommend this course to everyone who is active in the scientific field: It is truly helpful for the beginner and the more experienced scientific writer.- —Sjaak Pouwels, MD, PhD [surgeon and researcher]
I recently attended the writer’s course on authoring an Article of Excellence. As an inexperienced writer having published less than 5 papers in the past I knew I needed as much as help as I could get. This course was not only timely but I found it a revelation. It provided a strategy and offered a practical approach to scientific paper writing. What really appealed to me was the course structure, which broke down the components of an article into steps which were clear and easy to apply. I can certainly recommend the course to any author planning his or her first paper or early in their career.- Specialist Surgeon
I came to this course with the hope of gaining deeper knowledge of the fine points of the medical article. I was impressed with how much more I learned about the connection of study design to study reporting and about the underlying logic of the research article segments. I am taking a great deal of new information back to my journal to work on with our deputy editors. Thank you!- Physician, Medical Journal Editor
Outstanding course; I intend to use it immediately to help improve the process of drafting research papers in our department. Please continue to expand on this topic for integrated health professionals.- Nurse, Bariatric Program Coordinator
This was a great session in which my knowledge of research was enriched. I will apply it.- Surgeon
Thank you for sharing, Dr. Buchwald. Although a very advanced academic course it was easy to follow. A clear flowchart and road map with concise summary of each section was provided that gave a step-wise process for going through the different stages of writing the research paper from Introduction to Abstract. The presenter was clear and at ease at explaining the various statistical analyses. Enjoyed the depth and breadth of experience and knowledge of the speaker/author and information was presented ; excellent slides, clear handouts. Bring the course back next year!- US Army Medical Professional
We have time and resource constraints and lack adequate mentorship for getting our professionals to write more papers. This course will definitely reduce our knowledge deficit and speed up our publication development. We will send people to this course.- Chair, Surgery Department
Truly excellent academic course. I will take it again and recommend it to my colleagues.- General Surgeon
